Different types of lumber are used for various craftable items, and for upgrading your tools and parts of your Mansion at Rogost's Workshop. As you improve your axe you can chop more types of wood beyond the initial Wood that can be chopped with the Primitive Axe. The size of the wood also affects the ability to chop it. Your axe might be able to chop small stumps, be less effective against medium ones, and completely not work on large logs or stumps.
